Hi Chris,
your research is very good.
Correction- after reading your details.
Thomas James was my grand father not great grand father.
He died of a heart attack & Martha his wife later of bowel cancer.
Martha died a pauper after walking off the land at Mt Horrible at the back of Timaru.

Hi Chris,
what is your connection to Thomas Greig.
My older brother in Australia is very interested in tracing ancestors & has visited UK grave sites etc.
I think Thomas Greig was my great grandfather.
Iam originally from Timaru.
My father was Thomas James Greig, but known as Jim.

Do you have an email address as I could put you intouch with my Australian based brother?

Hi Chris,

Thank you for all the information regarding the Smart family, I am related through Edmund Smart, his daughter Clara Jane married Henry Pentecost.
I am currently living in Wellington, but most of my family are still currently living in Christchurch where I grew up.
I am in the process of getting some information about the Smarts together for my sisters friend whos maiden name was Smart, as it looks like we are related, small world.

Just wanted to tell you that you have a very impressive site. I don't think that our Smart lines ever met (but, yes, my Virginia born Samuel Smart-1804-had to come from somewhere in the UK, so who knows?) Have been to both the N and S islands of NZ and found it to be wonderful...along with the people as well. Ever so friendly. I do share your love of genealogy and SF (odd combo, eh). Let's see, I also would not mind one of your giant crayfish and some delicious NZ white wine as well, lol. Best wishes from Michigan/USA and keep up the good work! --Walter Smart

My family tree traces back to County Cork, but I am unsure of the first immigrant's names in the 1880's. My father Patrick born in 1917, died in 1991, was one of 7 children named in order of their birth: William, Rita, Dennis, Patrick, Thomas, Jane and James. My grandfather died in 1953 and was born in the USA. My great-grandfather was from Ireland. I wish I would have discussed it more with my father when he was living.

I see that you have put in a fair bit of work into this well done. I have information regarding the offspring of the George Thomas Smart/Isabella McDonald marriage if you want it.

About 6 years ago I received a copy of the Smart family tree from Mavis Long, Robert Roy Smart's daughter which I think came from either Pam Mahoney or Kathleen Winfield.

My understanding is that William Smart B1806 and ex randolph died at Chch 17th January 1853 and is buried at Barbadoes St cemetery in Chch.

I also have a copy of a 1927 newspaper article about Elijah Smart demonstrating the stockwhip for the Duke of York in Chch square. It may of course came from you originally.

Thanks for your efforts, its filled in a bit more of my tree.

Chris, this is a wonderful web site - how did you get all the BDM's printed out as you have? I am researching my GREIG family at the moment but I don't think it is the same one you are. I have yet to find the birth place of the original Greig (John Henry or James Henry) who came out to NZ in the late 1800's but his children and wife all seemed to believe he was from Berwick Upon Tweed. As far as we know from his marriage certificate his parents names were John Henry GREIG and Elizabeth CAMPBELL and his father was a soldier, but we can't prove any of this yet.

You have two Bourn children born months apart; ie Minnie Louisa 15 May 1977 and Walter Lionel b 4 July 1877. As he was christened on 18 Aug 1878 I think this is a typo.

I thought I would give you a couple of facts about the Howes side of the family. I have a couple of ammendments for you. My mother Phyllis did not have a middle name, so please take out the Hope from her entry.
Also, her brother Thomas Sydney was drowned in Lake Tekapo, along with my brother Paul and two friends on 23 Jan 1965. One body was recovered, that of Margaret Arnst aged 12. Her sister Margaret was the other fatality. I was the one who survived.

I am looking for the owner of an old photo album with at least 50 wonderful photos taken in mid to late 1800s. It includes one photo labelled "Mr Bourn" with the word Randolph further down the page.

There is a possibility that the album belonged to a Carrie Bourn. If you are interested please let me know and I'll send you a detailed list of the small amount of detail I have managed to record from this album. There are almost zero names included but the photos are wonderfully clear.

Hi...
Just a quick note to say how interesting your site is and the reason i was looking on here is because my nephews name is in here....Joseph Alistair Delamere...his birth mother is my sister and her ex-partner is Grant Smart. Unfortunately we didn't have any contact with Joseph until recently when he decided he would finally like to meet his "other family" and he is now living in Napier with my older sister as his father has a rare disease and apparently doesn't have long to live.
It was a pleasant surprise to see his name on here and i just thought you would like to know about his father.
If you would like any other details just email me and i'll try to fill you in on how Grant is actually doin.
