Thomas PAGAN
Thomas PAGAN was born about 1741. He died
on 21 March 1818 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland and is buried in
the cemetery there. Also in the same cemetery as Thomas is a
Isabella PAGAN who was also born about 1741 and died on 3
November 1821. It is believed that Isabella is Thomas's sister.
Thomas was married to Mary Hunter and they
had four children:
- Mary PAGAN was born on 3 October 1773 in Muirkirk,
Ayshire.
- Archibald PAGAN was born on 4 April
1776 in Muirkirk, Ayshire.
- Thomas PAGAN was born on 2 November
1778 in Muirkirk, Ayshire.
- Janet PAGAN was born on 23 February
1781 in Muirkirk, Ayshire, and it is known that she was
baptised in the same town.
Mary PAGAN
Mary PAGAN was born on 3 October 1773 in
Muirkirk, Ayshire and she was baptised in the same town on 10
November 1773. She died on 9 July 1827 in Muirkirk, Ayshire, and
she is buiried in the cemetery there.
At the time of her wedding to John GREIG on
29 September 1797 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, she was living in
Netherwood, and John was living in Burnfoot.
John GREIG was born about 1774 and died on
30 July 1835 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, and is buried in the cemetery
there
Mary PAGAN and John GREIG had eight
children. These were:
- Thomas GREIG was born
about July 1827 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire.
- Mary GREIG was born about
October 1802 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire.
- Jean GREIG was baptised on 30 June
1805 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire.
- Jean GREIG was baptised on 28 November
1807 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire. She married George MURDOCK
- Janet GREIG was baptised on 29 April
1810 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire.
- Isobel GREIG was baptised on 25
January 1813 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire.
- Sarah GREIG was baptised on 8 December
1815 in Muirkirk, Ayrshire.

William GREIG
William GREIG was born on 4 May 1798 in
Muirkirk, Ayrshire and was baptised there on 15 July 1798. In
1851, he was living with his family as a shepherd in the town of
Applecross, Ross and Cromarty. In addition to the family on the
1851 census, there was also an Anna STEWART living in the house,
who was his cousin. For the 1861 census, he was still a shepherd,
but was living in the town of Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty. He
died on 13 February 1880 in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty.

William married Margaret McKENZIE on 24
January 1823 in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty.
Margaret McKENZIE was born about 1797 in
Locharron, Ross and Cromarty and was baptised in Applecross, Ross
and Cromarty on 24 March 1804. Her parents were believed to be
Thomas McKENZIE and Hellena McKENZIE. Nothing else is know about
her family. On the 1851 Census she was living with her husband in
Applecross, Ross and Cromarty.
William and Margaret had five children.
These were:
- Helen GREIG was born about 1826 in Applecross, Ross and
Cromarty.
- Thomas GREIG was born about 1828 in Lochalsh, Ross and
Cromarty.
- Mary GREIG was baptised on 8 April
1830 in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty.
- John GREIG was born about 1832 in Lochalsh, Ross and
Cromarty.
- Anabella GREIG was born about 1840 in
Kintail, Ross and Cromarty. In 1851, she was still at
school in Applecross, Ross and Cromarty. In 1861, she was
a domestic servant in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty, and
for 1881 and 1891, she was a grocer in Locharron, Ross
and Cromaty. She has one known son, William PRIMROSE, who
was born about 1870 in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty. He
was with his mother for the 1881 census.

Helen GREIG
Helen GREIG was born about 1826 in
Applecross, Ross and Cromarty and was baptised on 23 April 1826
in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty. In 1871, she was with the rest of
her family in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty. She died on 2
December 1916 in Temuka, New Zealand and was buried on 5 December
in the Burke's Pass Cemetery, South Canterbury, New Zealand.
She married Donald BAIN on 3 March 1852 in
Applecross, Ross and Cromarty.
Donald BAIN was baptised on 14 May 1822 in
Applecross, Ross and Cromarty. With the rest his family, he was
at Locharron in 1871. In the early 1880's he had his own farm,
which was the Highfield station, at Burkes Pass in South
Canterbury, New Zealand and was still here when he died 6 April
1904. Donald was buried on 8 April 1904 in the cemetery at Burkes
Pass.
Both Donald, and especially Helen, had
detailed obituary notices published in The Timaru Herald which

Donald and Helen had seven children. These
were:
- Alexander BAIN was born about 1853 in
Scotland.
- Thomas BAIN was born about 1855 in
Applecross, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland and died about
1907 in the Mount Cook Registration District in New
Zealand.
- William BAIN was born on 26 May 1856
in Applecross, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. He died on 17
August 1926 in Fairlie, New Zealand and was buried in the
Fairlie Cemetery on 19 August 1926. William married Annie
McMILLAN on 22 September 1887 in Geraldine, New Zealand.
Annie was born about 1869 and died on 19 january 1917 and
is buried in the cemetery at Fairlie, New Zealand. They
had three daughters. William also had a detailed obituary

- Isabella BAIN was born on 17 February
1859 in Kirkhill, Inverness, Scotland and died about 1943
in Timaru, New Zealand, and was buried inthe Pleasant Point Cemetery on
30 November 1943. She married Angus McMasteron on
16 May 1889. Angus was born about 1849 in Scotland and
died about 1915 in Cave, South Canterbury, New Zealand.
They had at least one daughter
- Johanna BAIN was born on 29 May 1861
in Dingwall, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland and died on 19
February 1953 in Oamaru, New Zealand. She married Malcolm
McLEOD on 4 November 1885 in Burke's Pass, South
Canterbury, New Zealand.
- John BAIN was born on 20 October 1863 in Locharron,
Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
- Mary Ann BAIN was born on 6 June 1866
in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. She died on 10
April 1893 in Burke's Pass, South Canterbury, New Zealand
and is buried at the cemetery in Burke's Pass. It is
known that she did not marry, or have any children.
In 1874, Donald BAIN, with his wife Helen
GREIG, with their seven children emigrated from London on 29
August 1874 on the ship Pleides, arriving in New Zealand in
Lyttleton on 17 December, 1874. Helen's neice, Mary GREIG also came in the ship with them.

Thomas GREIG
Thomas GREIG was baptised on 28 April 1828
in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. His first wife was
Margaret MacKENZIE. There was one child from this marriage. She
was:
- Mary
GREIG was born about 1854
in Applecross, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland and according
to the IGI, she was baptised there on 25 December 1854.
In 1874, Mary came to New Zealand with her aunt, Helen GREIG, along with Helen's family.

Thomas's second wife was Ann McLENNAN, whom
he married on 24 March 1864 in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty,
Scotland. Ann McLENNAN was born about 1840 in Locarron, Ross and
Cromarty, Scotland and was baptised on 10 January 1841 in Contin,
Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
From this marriage, there were two
children:
- John GREIG was baptised on 28 May 1865
in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. He was still
in Locharron for the 1871 and 1881 census, but by 1891,
he with living in Midlothian, Scotland.
- Eliza GREIG was baptised on 11 July
1867 in Locharron, Ross and Cromarty, and was still here
in 1881.

John GREIG
John GREIG was baptised on 26 November 1832
in Lochalsh, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. He died on 25 November
1905 in Pleasant Point, South Canterbury, New Zealand and was buried in the cemetery at Pleasant
Point on 28 November 1905
In the 1905 Cyclopedia of New Zealand, some
information was published about John, as well as some details in
his obituary notice. Click here to see
transcripts of those messages.
He married Christina McINTOSH about 1861,
somewhere in Scotland. Christina McINTOSH was born about 1838 in
Glen Urguhart, Invernes, Scotland. She died on 10 March 1923 in
Claremont, South Canterbury, New Zealand and was buried in the
cemetery at Pleasant Point on 13 March 1923.

On 2 September 1861, John and Christina
emigrated from England on the ship Sebastapol, arriving in
Lyttleton on 14 December 1861.
Once in New Zealand, John and Christina had
eight children. These were:
- William GREIG was born on 15 February
1863 on the Opawa Station, near Timaru in New Zealand and
was baptised at St Marys Church in Timaru on 2 October
1863. He died on 28 October 1912 in Pleasant Point, and was buried at the cemetery in Pleasant
Point on 30 October 1912
- Thomas GREIG was born about December
1866 in Pleasant Point, New Zealand. He died on 2 June
1934 and was buried in the cemetery in the Timaru
Cemetery on 3 June 1934. Thomas married Martha GREEN on 2
July 1908 in her parents house at Gleniti, Timaru, New
Zealand. She was born on 23 March 1883 in Timaru, New
Zealand. She died on 20 August 1949 in the Timaru
Hospital and was buried in the cemetery at Timaru, two
days later. Thomas and Martha had three sons and one
daughter.
- James GREIG was born about 1867 and
died on 15 November 1918 in Timaru, New Zealand. He
married Sheila Morgan GREEN (sister of the Martha who
married his brother Thomas) in her parents house at
Gleniti, Timaru, New Zealand on 8 October 1907. Sheila
was born on 4 July 1886 in Timaru, New Zealand.
- Alexander John "Sandy" GREIG
was born about 1869 in Christchurch, New Zealand and died
about 1949 in Christchurch, New Zealand. He married
Stella RUTHERFORD in 12 October 1899 in her parents house
in Gleniti, Timaru, New Zealand. Stella was born on 3
March 1878 near Nelson, New Zealand and died about 1969
in Christchurch, New Zealand. They had three children.
- Helen GREIG was born about October
1871 and died at a rest home in Timaru, New Zealand on 1
June 1968, and was buried three days later in the
cemetery at Timaru. It is known that she did not marry or
have any children.
- Maggie GREIG was born about 1874 and
died in Timaru, New Zealand the next year and was buried
on 8 February 1875 in the cemetery at Pleasant Point.
- Mary GREIG was born about September
1876 in Pleasant Point, New Zealand and died on 13 August
1926 in Christchurch, New Zealand (Timaru has been
suggested) and was buried in the cemetery at Pleasant Point on 16 AUgust
1923. It is known that she did not mary or have any
children.
- George GREIG was born on 16 September
1877 in Pleasant Point, New Zealand. Nothing else is
known about him other than that he was working for the
civil service.

John BAIN
John BAIN was born on 20 October 1863 in
Locharron, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland. With the rest of his
family, he came to New Zealand in 1874. He died on 19 March 1916
in Burkes Pass, New Zealand and is buried in the cemetery at
Burke's Pass.
On 17 April 1893, John married Ellen Isabel
BURGESS. Ellen was born about 1867 in Burke's Pass New Zealand
and died on 6 April 1926 in South Canterbury, New Zealand and is
buried in the cemetery at Burke's Pass.
They had nine children:
- Mary Ethel BAIN was born about 1894 in
the MacKenzie Country area of New Zealand and died on 18
September 1938. She married Thomas STEPHENS about 1917 in
New Zealand.
- Donald John BAIN was born about 1896
in the MacKenzie Country area of New Zealand. He served
in Word War One as part of the 34th Reinforcements in the
Otago Infantry Regiment D Company. After the Wad, Donald
was a Shepherd in the MacKenzie Country. Donald died on
27 December 1965. He married Hilda Helen Marion BARCLAY
about 1925 in New Zealand..
- William "Bill" BAIN was born
about 1897 in the Mackenzie Country area of New Zealand
and died on 19 July 1968 and is buried in the cemetery at
Timaru, New Zealand. He served in World War One as part
of the 30th Reinforcements of the Canterbury Infantry
Regiment C Company. William was married to Ann ?, who was
a school teacher at Burke's Pass, New Zealand.
- James Gilbert "Jim" BAIN was
born about 1899 in the Mackenzie Country area of New
Zealand. He died on 15 June 1981 and is buried in the
cemetery at Fairlie, New Zealand. James married Ivy Bell
Emma SHUTE about 1926 in New Zealand. Ivy was born about
1900 and died on 13 December 1971 and is buried in the
cemetery at Fairlie, New Zealand.
- Lawrence Alexander BAIN was born about
1901 in the MacKenzie Country area of New Zealand and
died on 27 March 1982. He married Caroline Elizabeth KING
about 1924 in New Zealand.
- Thomas Albert "Tom" BAIN was
born abour 1903 in the MacKenzie Country area of New
Zealand and married Thelma Frances KING about 1927..
Nothing else is known about him.
- Ruby Helen BAIN was born about 1905 in
the MacKenzie Country area of New Zealand and died on 14
July 1991 and is buried in the Fairlie Cemetery at
Fairlie in New Zealand. It is known that she did not
marry or have any children.
- John Greig BAIN was born about 1907 in
the MacKenzie Country area of New Zealand at the age of
eleven weeks. He is buried with his parents in the
cemetery at Burke's Pass, New Zealand.
- John Burgess BAIN was born on 2
January 1910 in Kimbel, South Canterbury, New Zealand and
died on 8 June 1993. He married Margaret Ethel DORWARD
about 1931 in New Zealand. Margaret was born on 16
October 1905 in Balclutha, New Zealand and died on 18
April 1991. They had two children.
